Spotlight is a Unity 3D browser game made for Indie Speed Run 2012 competition where a game must be developed within 48 hours.

This is nothing like your typical game, in a way it is somewhat confusing when you first start off without any of the real objectives displayed. The idea of the game is that you're brought into a scene, during some time in your character’s life and choose objects in these memories that don't fit in. Then you will be brought into another scene and so on. These objects that are out of place are then all used to build the current state of where the character is located.

While it may be confusing it is certainly an interesting design for a game.

Totally Tiny Arcade

Totally Tiny Arcade is a game made up of remakes of popular arcade games like space invaders and Pacman. The main objective of the game is to race through as many arcade games as possible within the time limit you have and gain the most points you can overall.

The remade arcade doesn’t look as detailed or visually interesting in some cases as the original counterpart does. But that doesn't make it bad; you can still have fun playing all these remakes.

While this review is short, it's definitely a fun game that compiles most old popular arcade games into one for you to easily play. If you like the old arcade you'd definitely love this, if you're not into the old arcade but want to see how many of them compare to modern games, this is a somewhat good representation.

Perspective

From the DigiPen Institute of Technology and Great Games (we added that last part) comes Perspective, another brilliantly experimental and free PC game. Described by its authors as an experimental first person puzzle game, Perspective could be seen as an evolution of the idea behind Echochrome and will also remind you of indie hit Fez.

In this game, the player uses two different modes of control to finish the levels: one is a first person camera moving freely in the 3D space while the other is the avatar that is circumscribed to the 2D world that he has to navigate. You have to move around in 3D to align paths so that the avatar may reach its goal.

Perspective is a great game and one that will leave you scratching your head, thinking about which position you need to be in order for the avatar to advance. Clever and technically sound, it’s a must for fans of original ideas.

Steampac 3D

Steampac 3D is a re-imagination of the classic Pac-Man game, taking the beloved yellow character to a completely new environment. Pac-Man himself is recreated in a steampunk style, including some big green eyes that will make some players remember the Big Daddy from BioShock. Instead of eating pills, Pac-Man is now eating bolts and screwdrivers are used to weaken the mechanical ghosts.

This free game was developed by a Spanish author and even includes two distinct camera views to suit every taste: one in 3D, with screen rotations when you reach the edges, and the other the classical top-down view. As far as remakes go, this is an ingenious one and extremely playable that should appeal to all fans of the classic coin-op.

UnBoxed

UnBoxed is a free first-person puzzle game developed by students from the Vancouver Film School. In this game we step into the shoes of Zirk, an alien that is trapped inside a gigantic human-made spacecraft and has to solve several puzzles. You have to reach the exit in each area but there’s a twist – Zirk wears technologically advanced goggles that allow him to manipulate the environment by rotating the surrounding rows and columns, pretty much in Rubik’s Cube style. There are many deadly traps to avoid such as the fire cube, freeze cube or the laser gun. When you complete a level the number of moves is registered and you may later take another attempt to beat your own record.

UnBoxed can be played with keyboard and mouse as well as an Xbox controller. Besides the challenging levels, UnBoxed includes a level editor that allows players to design their own levels.

UnBoxed is a very polished puzzle game that is targeted at fans of titles such as Portal, Quantum Conundrum or even the free game Lifted.

Astrobunny

Astrobunny is another game created by students of the Digipen Institute of Technology and, just like other titles from this reputed institution, it shares several attributes – it’s free to download and play, it’s polished and tries to be somewhat original.

The tutorial explains all the mechanics of Astrobunny, which will get us ready for the 9 levels (plus one credits level) that comprise the game. Each level will take you no longer than a couple of minutes (restarts not included), so the game never outstays its welcome.

This is a puzzle game at heart, pushed by some strong mechanics that could easily develop into a commercial title for digital platforms. The goal is to take our space bunny home by driving him from planet to planet, collecting all the orbs that will turn a sad planet into a happy planet. We have no idea why this would bring him home, but bear with us. The thing is, you have to steer him from orbit to orbit without losing more than a few seconds between each one, or you’ll end up lost in space. Completely controlled with the mouse, our spaceship requires a lot of precision, since planets that don’t have orbits are deadly obstacles. You have to keep a keen eye on the cursor, which shows the spaceship’s condition, besides the time it can stand out of orbit.

We should also mention the planets that speed up your ship and, most importantly, the fire and ice ones. The ship has a temperature meter and we can’t stay more than a few seconds in these planets’ orbits, or we’ll burn/freeze to death. Juggling between the fire and ice planets is of vital importance.

That being said, Astrobunny is very easy to get into and won’t take long to finish. It’s a nice freeware puzzle game with some colorful graphics and charming enough for any fan of the genre.

Cuby the Game

Cuby the Game is a game about cubes, puzzles and an unlikely love story. This freeware PC game teaches us all we need to know about the amazing world of cubes, a world with more than meets the eye. You control a blue cube, one that has a flaming passion for a pink cube, which is unaware and inadvertently on the run.

Set in a world solely comprised of cubes – think of Minecraft but without the freedom to craft –, Cuby the Game offers three levels to explore and plenty of challenges to overcome before you join your beloved pink cube. The blue cube naturally doesn’t walk, it rolls and jumps over obstacles. To lift some bridges and create some stairs you have to solve puzzles such as pushing crates to switches, be it simple crates or with the need to match symbols. There’s also a little bit of Pac-Man, with many little yellow cubes that you can collect to increase the score, but this is just an added bonus for those who love to faultlessly complete their games. Some of these dots are in incredibly hard to reach places, so the task will be extremely difficult.

Later you’ll face some enemies – cubes, obviously – which move around and fire, so you’ll have to kill them Super Mario style – by jumping on them.

The 3D camera is fixed and occasionally switches position, freezing the game for a second to avoid confusion. However, sometimes it’s difficult to distinguish the position of the yellow cubes and you will only grab them by trial and error jumping. The soundtrack is comprised of some classical music from Mozart, Bach and Beethoven, among others.

Cuby the Game is a free PC game with the most unlikely of the love stories. It’s a competent puzzle game, slow paced as they should be but with enough going on to keep you interested for an hour or so.

Douse

Douse is an indie game from the inventive minds of the students of the Digipen Institute of Technology and also a poetic experience that would be a great fit to the collection of fans of games such as Flower or Journey. A free platformer game in beautiful 2D, Douse stars a main character that will make you think again about a drop of rain. The rain sprite that falls from the sky and into a supposedly lush forest has to find a way back home, meaning the clouds in the sky.

The way home is beautiful, peaceful and without any real challenge, since the idea of the game is to explore the amazing artwork that comprise the environment, relax to the soothing piano music and rain sounds and complete the mission of our beloved rain sprite. The adventure is made all the better with a gimmick that adds to the poetic aspect of the game, which is the ability to control rain and bring life back to plants, trees, flowers and everything else that was fading away in this forest. The mouse controls the rain stream and will bring back the beauty of the forest, creating platforms where we would otherwise be blocked, but also bringing the background to life, adding incredibly chosen colors to the hand-drawn graphics.

There’s no high score to beat in Douse, no enemies to kill or avoid, not a sight of any meter to hinder the beautiful visuals. So, what could possibly be a negative in this game? Sadly, the extremely short longevity. With only three sections to explore, Douse will be over in 15 minutes, with the rain sprite rejoining its friends in the clouds after climbing a tree. It made us yearn for a longer game. Douse is beautiful to look at, soothing to play and an experience that will most likely make you smile.

Blink

 

Blink is a free 2D puzzle platformer from the talented students of the Digipen Institute of Technology. This game is centered on a teleporting mechanic that will take us through several puzzles. Your character is a cute little robot-looking alien who looks like a robot and has that essential ability to navigate the side-scrolling map.

You don’t have any kind of weapon to kill enemies – the only thing you can do is avoid them by using your teleporting ability, something that you have to master to progress. Luckily, the game begins with some quick instructions that teach us the fundamentals of the controls. Basically you use the right mouse button to project your beam to antennas, crates or mirrors that deflect it and then press the left mouse button to teleport and, in some situations, exchange positions with the said object. Naturally, the objects are placed in a way that will make the game a linear exercise, more of a case of getting inside the designer’s heads than of freely experimenting with the teleporting mechanic. That being said, there are a few puzzles where some freedom can be experienced, sometimes in a way that the game wasn’t expecting. There’s even a boss that will take some thinking to conquer.

One of the most common puzzles is the kind that asks you to place a crate on top of a platform, deactivating a barrier that hindered our progress. This sometimes requires the use of mirrors to reach the crates and then teleport to locations that our alien otherwise wouldn’t reach. Although he is capable of jumping, this is useful only for overcoming simple platforms.

Graphically Blink is really pleasing to the eye, with beautiful, lively colors and different layers of scrolling scenery that add to the illusion of depth. There’s a successful cardboard feel to the visuals and the piano music really suits the game.

Blink is a beautiful achievement, a relaxing experience for players who like to test their wits in a free indie game that looks and sounds poetic. Fans of puzzle games shouldn’t hesitate to download this game.

Flying Pigs

Angry Birds is a worldwide phenomenon and there’s no escaping its grasp. But what if the pigs replaced the birds and had to knock down big, bad wolves (actually, they’re cut and fluffy)? Inspired by the classic fairy tale of the three little pigs, Angry Pigs… I mean, Flying Pigs is as simple and just as addictive.

This free Japanese PC game puts the cute pigs fighting back the wolves, using a very orthodox method: shooting themselves off a cannon. Well, at least they’re wearing helmets – safety first! In full 3D, this game asks the player to hit or topple all the wolves in a level, using the arrow keys to move the cannon around the wolves’ fortress and to control the inclination of the shot – use Space to shoot. Obviously, the number of shots (meaning pigs) is limited, so accuracy is essential. A few extra shots may be used to collect the coins and there’s also a high score to keep us playing over and over again.

Flying Pigs is great fun and very addictive, with dozens of levels to conquer and some cool power-ups to send the wolves and boxes flying in the air (bombs, for example). Although physics aren’t exactly perfect – the pigs should bounce more, instead of getting glued to the ground most of the time – they are perfectly serviceable. Absolutely recommended for those who wish to burn a few minutes now and then.

Me and My Shadow

Me and My Shadow is a clever open source puzzle platformer from Luka Horvat that looks a lot like Sony’s Echochrome at first glance, but has a different gameplay twist. The goal in this monochrome game is to guide your character or his shadow to the door that ends each level.

If during the first levels the shadow seems like a useless clone of the main character, soon it will be needed to overcome the more complex levels. Cooperative thinking is required to reach the door with any of the two characters. However, the shadow isn’t controlled directly – instead the player ‘records’ the main character moves by pressing the space bar and then the shadow replicates the exact same movements, only with different results.

Different kinds of blocks add variety to the puzzles, such as the darkest ones that are only solid to our shadow, or the fragile ones that break if we step on them too often. Moving blocks require some timing, especially when we need to record our moves and make the shadow do the crossing.

Me and My Shadow has a long and explicit tutorial that introduces us to all of the intricacies of this game. With currently over 40 levels and the option to create more puzzles with the built-in level editor – and particularly the possibility of adding levels created by other players – this is a game that any fan of mindbenders will surely enjoy.

BooWate

BooWate is a free puzzle platform game developed by the indie French team Cyber@One Productions. Featuring a clean and attractive aesthetic that some may compare to games such as Portal and Quantum Conundrum, this is a game based on physics and puts the player’s skills to the test across several rooms. The goal is to reach a button that ends the level, but it’s not as simple as it sounds. A simple fixed screen tutorial teaches us the ropes before we venture into the demanding puzzle world of BooWate.

The player has to use the boxes that are scattered across the levels to overcome the puzzles and reach improbably high places. Making piles of boxes is something that may lead to a lot of frustrations, since one misplaced box may topple all the others that took quite some time to arrange. But that is part of the fun of BooWate, since the levels are timed and the best players will feel challenged to beat the best times.

BooWate could be improved in some areas, but those are not really related to the appealing design of the game itself. The menus, for one, are beautiful to look at and intuitive, but the transition between each one takes more time than it should. Worst still is the obligation to change the keyboard layout from qwerty to azerty, something that has to be done through Windows. A simple option to configure the keyboard controls in the game would spare many players to what can be a frustrating move.

However, those who get to fully enjoy BooWate and are fans of mindbenders are in for a treat. This is a competent, clever and demanding game.

Caged Math

Caged Math is a mathematical game created by Jan Nohavica and inspired by KenKen, a logic game imagined by Tetsuya Miyamoto. The game also features some similarities to the popular puzzle game Sudoku.

For a freeware release (the author would certainly deserve and appreciate a donation), Caged Math is an extremely polished game featuring plenty of options to keep logic fans stimulated, even offering graphical resolutions up to 1920x1080. There are puzzles for every kind of player, from the amateurs to the most gifted in arithmetic – and although we’re part of the former, we still enjoyed our time in the game and managed to exercise our brain at the same time.

The author offers the option to select board sizes from 4 to 10 and bigger doesn’t necessarily means more complicated – that’s something that has to be chosen in the difficulty setting, with easy, medium, hard and expert options. A larger board is guaranteed to take quite some time to solve, since besides adding numbers to the cages according to the displayed operation (addition, multiplication, subtraction, division and equal) to end with the correct result, the player has to make sure that no column or row repeats the same number, just like in Sudoku. It’s more complicated than it seems at first glance, but a check option is helpful for knowing where we’re making mistakes. Caged Math includes an online mode to test our skills against other players, a scoreboard to track our performance and some challenges (achievements) to keep us honing our math expertise.

Caged Math is the sort of rare and clever game, one that puts our logic to the test and still ends up as a great distraction. Absolutely recommended for those who aren’t just driven by the number of bodies they drop in their run-of-the-mill FPS game.

The Cat That Got The Milk

The Cat That Got The Milk is an abstract game that would make famous artist Picasso proud. The premise of a cat and his search for the milk bottle resulted in a game world that seems like it is out of one of our wildest dreams. The cat, that we simply control with the cursor keys in straight lines (much like what we see with the Tron light cycles) is nothing more than a line that has to reach a circle – the milk, actually.

As things progress, levels become more and more complex, difficult and abstract, with all kinds of shapes moving around and resulting in difficult to predict patterns. The 18 levels won’t take much time to complete – about 15 minutes – but this is a night out that every player should try. Maybe this is what it feels like to be a cat walking in the town.

When all is said and done, The Cat That Got The Milk is a different kind of game, one that scores highly mostly due to artistic merit and one that will mess with your senses as well as with your reflexes.

Danger! Energy

Danger! Energy is a freeware puzzle game with a sci-fi background – earth is devastated and the remaining humans live between the real world and virtual reality. An entity named Virtual Controller (MVC) seems to control the humans and prevent them from integration in the real world. Faust, the new captain, enters the struggle and will try to conquer freedom.

Although it’s a puzzle game, Danger! Energy includes some narrative sequences to support the 80 tasks at hand, divided into 5 different locations. The goal is to feed several nodes in the level using energy beams. Naturally, there are some barriers that will require us to study the layout of the level and plan the route accordingly. It’s a simple premise but one that can get addictive.

Marble Arena 2

In Marble Arena 2 the indie developers take the concept of the first game – inspired by the classic Marble Madness – to another level. The beautiful 3D mazes of the game can be explored in single player or multiplayer, with the goal being that of collecting stars to reach the next level. Although seemingly simple, the task quickly becomes arduous but at the same time addictive and fun.

With 50 arenas to complete, many power-ups and different types of ground to cover, Marble Arena 2 will be a good challenge for players with nerves of steel. The great presentation, with a level of detail that could put to shame some retail games, and the easy to use level editor are the icing on this delicious and succulent cake. Besides running on Windows PCs, Marble Arena 2 also has versions for Mac and Linux.

Kuriris

Kuriris is a nice and free puzzle game inspired by Tetris and Columns, with the same kind of simple but extremely addictive gameplay. The goal of the game is to make the squirrels eat the chestnuts and eliminate the lines but there are some variations that turn things into a more intricate process.

For one, squirrels may only eat chestnuts in a line. Blocks of ice may remove squirrels from the screen and if two of them fall nose to nose, they will fall in love and earn us some score bonuses. There are other combinations – for example, making a line for removing the chestnuts from the ice blocks – but everything is simple and will take only a few minutes to learn.

Back to Bed

Back to Bed is a very original freeware game for PC where players have to guide Bob the sleepwalker to the warmth and safety of his bed. Players control his subconscious protector Subob and navigate a dozen isometric levels filled with hazards and dangerous creatures.

Gameplay is similar to the 1993 2D side scrolling game Sleepwalker for the Commodore Amiga, as some players may recall. However, the isometric nature of Back to Bed makes for different strategies and the surreal visuals – that could be out of someone’s dream – guarantee that this is a game like no other.

In Alter Ego the player controls a hero who has the rarest of conditions: a phantom twin, his alter ego. Digger Ant

Digger Ant is a fun and addictive Boulder Dash clone that offers some nice graphics to go along with the 58 levels, a longevity that will please many puzzle game fans.

Developed by DynArt Games, Digger Ant is a freeware PC game inspired by the timeless classic and that has seen many updates, both free and retail. The core of the game remains and that’s the most important, since that is where the fun of the gameplay is. The player has to dig the ground and collect all the gems. Habbo

Habbo is a famous virtual world with a huge player community, boasting numbers millions above the already massive Second Life playerbase – 230 million registered players as of August 2011. BrianSplode! is a game of wits and skill where the player has to destroy some alien brains in a similar way to Worms. However, this time you’re controlling a fixed canon and have to calculate the rocket trajectory perfectly in this freeware game.

Although we cannot move, there are yellow pads in the levels to make the rocket rebound, along with a few powers to alter the rocket trajectory. This is a simple and fun game.

Hanano Puzzle

Hanano Puzzle is a freeware game for those who like to exercise their brain. A Japanese PC game of roses and cubes, it may seem odd at first but once the concept is clear, it’s time for some head scratching.

To sum it up, the player has to join a colored cube with a flower of the same color to result in a beautiful rose. However, the cubes may only move one square at a time horizontally and are able to exchange places with the flowers. The trick is to find the correct order in which to join the cubes and flowers so that new pathways are created to reach the most improbable places. It may sound easy but will leave most players restarting a level over and over again, trying to discover the devious solutions.

Ratsack Adventures

Ratsack Adventures is a freeware puzzle game that cleverly mixes two of the greatest classics in videogaming history: Tetris and Lemmings. It looks great and plays even better, with a multiplayer co-op mode for those who want to challenge a friend in the same PC.

The goal of the game is to make points by aligning full rows or helping the mice reach the exits. The catch? By rotating the pieces we also rotate the entire screen, adding an extra layer of strategy to the game. There’s also a separate puzzle mode in the best tradition of Lemmings.

Forget-Me-Not

Forget-Me-Not is a freeware arcade game reminiscent of classics such as Pac-Man and Centipede, offering simple visuals but extremely addictive gameplay. Forget-Me-Not tries to get some of the old-school magic back, betting on simple but challenging mechanics that keep players invested in the game.

Forget-Me-Not offers randomly generate mazes and tons of levels with increasing difficulty, with the goal being that of eating all the pills in the level so that the level exit may be opened. Some monsters will try to stop us, along with a few surprises.

Poton

Poton is a small freeware game with Japanese origins and inspired by the Bomberman saga. The presentation is very similar and so is the objective – to eliminate all the enemies in the screen –, although the graphics are different. But the most important thing is that the gameplay can also be addictive just like in Bomberman. Instead of using bombs, the player has to create holes for the creatures to fall down, shutting them immediately after so the enemy doesn’t escape.

Stroke 1.4

Don’t let the name scare you – the only way this game can give you a stroke is through its sheer difficulty. Stroke 1.4 is a freeware puzzle game of Japanese origins about a little boy who has to collect the gems in each level, but beware – there’s no turning back once you walk, since the tile you stepped on is gone forever. There are other special tiles that will teleport you, and the goal in each level is to collect the said gems and reach the exit.

This is a game for the most patient fans of difficult puzzle challenges, so be certain that you will restart the same level over and over again. It’s worth it, though.

Bubble Chains is another match 3 puzzle game from the maker of Jag, and also freeware and open source. The player has to clean the board by combining 3 or more colored bubbles before time runs out. Tools provide different abilities, such as adding more time or destroying some bubbles.

Teleportower Plus

Teleportower Plus is a japanese free indie puzzle game that will test players’ skills in over 100 levels. A level editor is included for those interested in creating their own challenges.

The premise behind Teleportower Plus is a simple one – we have two different towers side by side and the main character is able to teleport between them. This is the only way to overcome obstacles and reach the crystal that acts as a level exit, all of this within a given time limit. Although the game starts very easy – just the time to teach the basics to the player – things get challenging really fast, with more complex platforms and a few dangers such as spiked balls.

Against the Wall

Against the Wall is, apparently, a simple game with a basic concept - the player and a wall, everything else around them and under the brazing sun is emptiness. However, picture yourself in the position of the protagonist and it can become a tale of desperation and last chance, trying to find the only visible way out of this place, a wood construction not so far away.

The only way of getting there is through a mysterious object that emanates light and is able to pull stones from the wall. This way we are able to climb the stones, one by one and carefully not to fall. This freeware 3D PC game was created with the Unity engine and can be downloaded or played online at the author’s website.

Pragmatica

Pragmatica is a freeware puzzle game for PC set in a perhaps not so distant future where robots have replaced the human workers in the industry. Pragmatica is the name of the corporation responsible for this, having designed the interface that controls the robots.

The player uses the interface (on the left of the screen) to control the robots, solving mission after mission according to the proposed objectives, such as leaving a maze or even causing accidents on purpose. This is achieved by using some simple icons that command the robot to act in a way such as turning around or move carefully in a dangerous scenario.

Pragmatica includes a simple mission editor for those who wish to create their own challenges.

Snoogles

Retrosouls Games, makers of Dreamball 64, are back with Snoogles, a freeware puzzle game that was developed with Blitz Basic 3D and began its life as a shareware title. Dwarves are the stars of this colorful game and they have to solve dozens of puzzles.

The player has to guide one or more dwarves through the maps, switching between each one at will and collecting all the rings available in the map. Once done, the exit gate will open. There are teleports to use, enemies to defeat and boxes to push, using them as weapons or as improvised bridges. A smooth difficult curve eases the player in but beware: death means that the level must be restarted from scratch.

Adore Puzzle 2

After Adore Puzzle, a free PC puzzle game where players have to recreate pictures of famous European landmarks, AdoreStudios release the sequel with a different theme. This time the focus is on the gastronomy and flavors of Europe, with some quality shots as a reward for the players’ wits.

Just like in the first game, there are two modes in Adore Puzzle 2 – Puzzle and Slide – and the player is free to switch between them at any moment. The timer and turn counter are not there to limit gameplay, but as tools to determine the ranking of the player.

Transcendpang

Transcendpang is a weird remake of the classic arcade game Pang, created by a Japanese developer. Gameplay is obviously addictive and fast-paced, with many levels and 12 characters to choose from. Each one is stranger than the next, offering different abilities (speed, skill…) and mysterious names such as Neove, Ri and Zunu.

Some special powers may be used by filling the bar at the bottom of the screen, and Transcendpang adds even more shooter elements to the original formula. The backgrounds add another layer to the surrealistic tone of the game. This is a well designed and psychedelic take on the classic Pang and a great free arcade game on its own.

Claustrosphere

Claustrosphere is a brilliant and free third-person 3D arcade game where the player has to control a small ship inside a sphere that is in constant mutation. This sphere indicates how the player is doing, and will shrink if things aren’t going too well, with the player taking too much damage. When the sphere crushes the ship, it’s game over.

Inspired by addictive classics such as Geometry Wars and Tetris but offering a unique twist, Claustrosphere is a delight to watch, play and hear, with some very colorful yet clear graphics and an exciting techno soundtrack.

Incertitude is a catchy free platformer with puzzle elements, created using the Game Maker tool. There’s no real fighting required, only the need to avoid the dangers that appear in your way.
